Third Sector Award | Small Charity Big Achiever | 20th September 2018
Children for Health’s outstanding global impact was recognized at the Third Sector Awards when it won the Small Charity, Big Achiever category. Clare Hanbury, founder and CEO, was at the London Marriott Hotel in Grosvenor Square pick up the award.
“I am honoured and humbled we won this award. I’m lucky to have spent much of my working life doing work that I love and it is more than I hoped for that our charity has received this recognition.”
MCM Net sponsored the Small Charity, Big Achiever category and the CEO, John McMahon presented the award.
“We specifically chose this award because it resonates with our own beliefs; size really does not matter, if you believe in what you are doing and are passionate about helping, a small number of people can make a profound difference.”
This award really means a lot to us. It’s so difficult for small organisations like us to ‘compete’ with the big agencies when they have professional fund-raising departments.
But we did it! We’ve proved that what we are doing is worthwhile and we are having an impact on the lives of many thousands of children.

GO, GROW and GLOW for a Healthy, Strong Body and Mind clearly addressing the role of Balanced Diet in a attractive way. [...] This poster can contribute a lot towards improving child nutrition by promoting the key messages of Infant and Young Child Feeding, Growth Monitoring and Promotion.
Deaths from diarrhoeal disease continue to devastate resource poor populations unnecessarily. Treatment with Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS) is proven to save lives from dehydration but, tragically, many children do not receive it. . This poster shows children how to become “life-savers” through learning about ORS and using it for sick children in their own families and communities. The pictures and text are brilliantly clear. Their impact is likely to be enormous.
The 10 messages for Diarrhoea [poster] is truly a simple, life-saving tool for the prevention of damage or death from diarrhoea. It needs to be told everywhere for every age. Indeed children learn faster with pictures and this tool has what it takes to optimize basic learning about diarrhea.
I would like to appreciate the efforts made by the group on the issue of diarrhoea. A lot of information has been gotten and I am in the field now training village health workers and other Health care personnel on diarrhoea prevention and also on hygiene and sanitation promotion. ... The health aspect due to the crisis in Anglophone. Cameroon has been forgotten completely and BARUDEV is taking this as a challenge to assist communities with displaced people to improve on their health situation. Thanks!
The 10 Diarrhoea messages for children to learn & share poster is a vital public health intervention for the prevention of diarrhoea, especially in children. Both the text and pictures convey the messages clearly, concisely, and in a child friendly manner. I believe it also has the potential to effect the desired impact it is designed for. Another thing I like about the poster is that it can be used by anybody; parents, teachers and even health workers, to teach children.
As a health professional, clear accurate and simple messages are essential. My recent research in London indicates that many parents were unsure about some aspects of oral health especially in regards to young children, the Children for Health oral health poster is a wonderful way to share essential facts and advice. I especially love all the ideas for parents and teachers such as the rainbow stick. Keep up the good work.

It is hoped that the messages in the poster will be picked by health and education authorities in those countries where oral hygiene is a problem. But more importantly, by schools and communities that can take these messages and put them into practical practice. School and community oral health activities are essential to install correct toothbrushing behaviour into the routine habits of especially young children. This poster will help to do this.
It looks lovely, and reads very well. Great job integrating so much input--it's not easy to find the right balance between useful information and accessibility, while also thinking about the capacity of children (which is bigger than we may think, but not enough to justify textbook level!).

[The A Mazing Treasures storybook] was a truly inspiring read. The story captures the essence of what it means to be inclusive and highlights the importance of creating a welcoming environment for all individuals, regardless of their background.
What I particularly loved about the story is the relatable characters and their real-life struggles with diversity and inclusivity.

[The HIV/AIDS poster and storybook] was a wonderful project from the start. So encouraging to read how many times the two-sided poster has been downloaded. I really like the 10 drawings and captions – nothing intimidating or scary, just some very basic and important information delivered in a non-judgemental and friendly way.
Ah goodness me, ‘The Girl Who Was Pushed Outside’ – absolutely brilliantly written and so very true. Every school should have a copy of this book, not just for the information and guidance it contains, but so that every child understands and develops empathy for other children and, in turn, adults.
I am a paediatrician with over 35 years experience. [...] The Summer Institute of Linguistics works in many minority languages on 6 continents and over 90 different countries. Among our many activities we promote literacy in the vernacular and have a library of books that can easily be translated and used.
Many of your child health education posters contain excellent information that could be easily adapted to a book for our Bloom Library and made available for translation into languages with limited access to health education.
Thank you for your hard work with these materials - I have used them in my teaching of health care workers in Papua New Guinea and think that they could be wonderfully used in the Bloom Library.
